24th Oct to 27th Oct - Forster to Brisbane

24th Oct - Forster to Grafton

View Australia Tracks in a larger map

It was a Sunday morning and both me an Kim were very happy to have a lazy one. I spent some time organising my blog and pictures etc over breakfast and then at about lunch time we went for a drive around the town of Forster.

Kim took me to see all of the views, beaches and river etc. It was a really miserable morning/afternoon and was raining but even then I could see that it is a really lovely place. We saw some Whales off in the distance. I was not too sure whether to stay another night in Forster because the weather was so bad and I only had the Pacific Highway ahead of me i.e. no lovely quiet roads. I decided that as I still have such a long way to go up to Brisbane that I would try to get off today.

Kim very kindly gave me a lift in the rain to the service station up the road where I thought I might be able to hitch a lift north. At least that way I could check people out before getting into their car. After about 30min I met a guy called Paul that was driving all the way up to Brisbane and he said he would take me. It turned out brilliantly. He is a lovely guy and we had loads in common to chat about on the way. The weather got worse as the day went on. There were thunderstorms and torrential rain! I was very glad to be doing the long distances where there are only busy roads (motorways) in a car. It would not have been safe by bike.

We stopped in Grafton about 8ish and had a lovely Chinese meal and nattered till late.

Lovely chilled day - glad not to be biking today.

25th Oct - Grafton to Murwillumbah

View Australia Tracks in a larger map

1 month since I left the UK - and what a month!

Me and Paul got up early to get back on the road again. I decided not to go all the way to Brisbane with him and instead stay in Murwillumbah so that I could go and climb Mt Warming. It is the point which sees the sunrise first in Aus and surrounded by natural rain forests. Byron Beach is not too far away.

We had breakfast in a small town on the way and then Paul dropped me off in Murwillumbah at lunch time. I went to the tourist info place to find out about accommodation/trains/distances etc and then went to the library to do some emailing and couch surfing to try and get accommodation for the next few days. I am really glad that I did as it just rained non stop for 3 hours. There was no point in even thinking of climbing Mt Warning today as it was just in cloud.

I ended up getting supplies in town and having an explore and wander round the lovely small town of Murwillumbah and then biking out to the campsite at the base of Mt Warming. It was not a long bike ride (14km) and it was really beautiful through the forested hills - but the road was flat. Stopped off at lovely fruit and veg place and the guy gave me some free fresh mangos and an orange.

It was raining hard and the rivers were really full.

Took this photo of the rain hitting the sign for the "Rain Forest Cafe) - I love irony.

The guy at the campsite said I could put my tent under the protection in the kitchen area as I was like a drowned rat when I arrived. At least I would have a dry tent to put away in the morning.

Met Alison who was also camping. She is traveling round NSW selling her map of the area. She had created the map by walking all of the trails and driving all of the roads in the area with a GPS tracker. It is the only map with all of this information at this scale. Great. She decided to join me up Mt Warming for sunrise as she had never done it.

Cooked soup and pasta for diner on my stove. My budget is going well. Banana sandwiches rock! Bought a big bag of porridge oats for 50p and pasta for £1. Most of the time though food is double compared to the UK.

26th Oct - Mt Warming for Sunrise

View Australia Tracks in a larger map

Alarm went off at 3 and I got everything all ready. We got into the car at 3.30 and drove the 4km up the road to the start of the walk. The walk up was fine in the dark with head torches. I was a well marked route with man made steps and chains etc in the difficult parts. There is one stretch which is pretty step up the rocks to the stop. It was good to stretch my legs on the last section as Alison told me to go ahead.

The views really were magical! I love having a decent camera and being able to record all of this trip. There was low cloud over the valley. The views were amazing. We watched the sunrise for about 1 hour. There were 3 other people up there: a couple that had walked up as well and a guy that camped up the top (we woke him up when we arrived as we did not realise that he was there).

We got back about 9.30 and I then went to sleep in my tent until 12 and got up to pack away my things. Chatted with lovely people from UK over my porridge breakfast at the campsite. Left the campsite at 2 and biked into town for some supplies. On way I had to stop at this beautiful little cafe by the creek for a coffee and some cheese cake. It was a lovely treat :-)

In Murwillumbah I got some string etc to temporary fix my pannier rack on my bike. Also got some cheap food and of course the obligatory banana sandwich.

As I was leaving town (already running late) I stopped to take a picture of the Jackaranda Trees with the lovely purple flowers and met Guy who is walking from Brisbane to Melbourne for the next few months. He was really lovely. Hat and stick and everything.....

We had a really good natter for about 1 hour. It is a shame I was heading out of town as it would have been good to spend more time with him. I might end up meeting him on ride from Melbourne to Sydney in a month. Good to meet another nutter.

Left town about 5ish thinking that would give me about 2,5 hours of biking and I would get to the place 10km beyond Natural bridge where the guy at last night's campsite said I could free camp. Tough ride up to the boarder to Queensland. Uphill for about 1.5hours non stop. Slow going but beautiful. My legs did not go or anything but I was glad to get to the top.

When I got to Natural Bridge it was getting really dark and I looked for a place to put my tent - but there was no where obvious and also signs for no camping! I thought about it and saw the public toilets there. Outside the loos was a large decking area for people to sit and eat etc. I thought the best idea would be to wait for the people to leave so that no one knew that I was here. I though people would leave by 8 at the latest as there is nothing to see in the dark! How wrong could I be....

I decided to hide in the disabled loo for a few minutes and wait for people to go. There started to get more and more people outside and I got very tired and sleepy (it had been a long day). I feel asleep (knowing that I had to get up very early to bike to met Kim). It has to be one of the strangest places I have stayed.....

It turned out that it was a big tourist thing down here to go and see the glow worms in the caves. I was woken up by the rangers at 9ish. They had seen me in here. They had no sense of humor. They said that they would drop me off down the road somewhere that I could put up my tent. Unfortunately they would not wait for 10 mins for me to go and see the glow worms and so I missed it. Oh well :-(

I rough camped by a river under a shelter as it was easier to put up my tent there. It was 11 ish by the time I got sorted. I did not have the best nights sleep.

21st Oct - 23rd Oct - Sydney to Forster

21st Oct 2010 - Sydney to Avoca

View Australia Tracks in a larger map

Really feeling excited now. Fully rested and packed and organised and really to go. Couch surfing tonight for the first time ever.

Cleaned up Dan's flat and packed everything. Poached eggs on toast for breakfast :-) Left about midday and biked through Sydney CBD down to the Ferry terminal. Unfortunately, my bike started making bad noises again from the back wheel. I had tested it over the last 2 days biking around Sydney and it was absolutely fine. As soon as I put more weight on it (with all of my bags) the noise started again. It is obviously just the extra pressure on the wheel.

Sat and watched the world go by and took photos of the Opera house while waiting for the Manly ferry at 2. The ferry ride was really worth doing. Great views of the Opera House and Bridge.

From Manly I biked up the coast from manly to palm beach. First bit was very slow, hilly and too much traffic. Very built up. Even though all of the individual items I am carrying do not weigh much they all realLy add up. I may get rid of camping equipment when I go to India. It makes a massive difference to how fast I can cycle. I think I am averaging 15km/hour where as in the UK on my racing bike with no bags I was averaging about 35km/hour.

After a couple of hours I found some lovely quite roads along the coast with great views. I stopped off at a couple of bike shops on the way to check the back wheel. They both said that Dan had done an awesome job of taking the back wheel to pieces and re-greasing it but that once they bearings start making a noise the only way to fix it is to replace all of the parts. Even a tiny scratch which can't be seen by eye can cause a noise. They said that it was not a problem to continue riding for a while if the noise was not bothering me. I decided to carry on and get it fixed when I stop somewhere for a while. I will do that in a couple of weeks when I meet Kim in Brisbane.

The palm beach ferry to Ettalong wad great. Took about 30 mins. Views amazing. I meet the "Ferry Friends" that travel every day to work on the ferry. Non of them work together but they have got to know one another as they see each other every day. They thought that I was mad biking but were very friendly. Mel very kindly offered me a lift to where I am staying tonight
at North Avoca Beach as he was going that way. Fab! No need to kill myself on first day and it was great to arrive early.
I got to Kurt's house about 6. My first couch surfing experience. Had a really awesome stay. They were lovely. They were out playing tennis but left it open for me to just let myself in and get showered etc. There were 3 guys, Matt, John and a Kurt and also Kurt’s girl friend (I can't spell her name and so I am not even going to embarrass myself trying - Kurt if you are reading this please email me her name). They kindly spared their Mexican and wine (GOON sac - new term for boxed wine) with me.

Played Table Tennis with Matt till late. These guys have got life sorted. Work till 4 then the decision on whether to go surfing or play tennis, squash, sea kayak. Weekends spent partying. House is in a valley surrounded by trees and only 5 minutes from the beach. They are really chilled and spend the weekends partying. Matt made the fantastic observation about how ironic it is that the "convicts" from the uk where sent to this island paradise and now loads of people from the UK are trying to get here.
I heard the Cicadas for the first time. They were really loud. Apparently they are just going to get loader as the summer arrives. There were also loads of bats.

My first experience of couch surfing rocked!

22nd Oct 2010 - Avoca to Anna Bay

View Australia Tracks in a larger map

Beautiful sunny morning. Spent some time couch surfing and had a fried breakfast with Matt.

Left at 11 and headed north. First bit very hilly. Slow going to start. Biked through The Entrance, along the coast. I had a long way to go today to get to my next couch surfing destination and so hitched along bits of highway where there was no other country route. I put my bike on a bus from Swansea to Newcastle as the roads were too busy. The only road was the equivalent to a Motorway in the UK. Caught the ferry from Newcastle to Stockton around 5 and then biked from there to past Williamtown. It was getting late and I was feeling bad about turning up so late at someone's house so although legs were ok I hitched to Anna bay. Lovely guy picked me up in a delivery van and drove me the last 15km. Unfortunately I am really rubbish with names and I can't remember his (if you are reading this please email me your name and I will add it here!).
Note to self: remember to write down people's names!

Couch Surfed in Anna bay at The Wanderers Retreat (http://www.wanderersretreat.com) in Peter and Jackie's home. They have a fantastic property in the middle of acres of trees. They run a business renting out cottages and tree houses in the bush. A fantastic place to stay on holiday. I arrived about 7, settled in and then had a lovely spag boll meal with Peter. Jackie arrived after work later on. They are really lovely people and it was great to hear their traveling stories and learn more about the area. They kindly phoned a friend up in Forster to arrange a place for me to stay tomorrow. Thanks so much Peter and Jackie for such a lovely stay!

23rd Oct 2010 - Anna Bay to Forster

Saw my first ever Koalas, Pelans and Goannas in the wild today! Camels as well.....

Jackie and Peter took me on a tour of the area first thing to see a Koala, the 30km beach and rolling sand dunes of Anna Bay and then to the look out over Nelson Bay. It is a really beautiful area. I would very much recommend going on holiday here. There is sand surfing on the dunes and Camel rides. I came all the way to Aus to see Camels!

There was no ferry at 10 (as advertised on the net) so I sat and had coffee at the harbor with Dan and Jackie and then got the ferry to Tea Gardens at 11.15. Ferry guy let me on for just $5 rather than $15. Thanks!

It is a lovely sunny morning again. The ferry ride over to Tea Gardens is over 1 hour long and really worth doing. The route goes the same way as the Whale/Dolphins tours but costs a lot less. I met 5 sisters on the ferry that were very chatty and friendly. They go on holiday together for 1 week every year.

In Tea Gardens I met Ronda on the Harbor. She offered me a free sausage in a bun to help me on my way so I popped to the local church (where they were having a jumble sale) to get a sausage for lunch. Everyone was really friendly. Ronda said that they would put an article in the local paper to try to help me raise money for Oxfam. Cool. Thanks!

Set off at 1.30 with a long bike ride ahead. The ride was amazing! This is what I came to Aus for. The route took me along quiet country roads (Mungo Brush Road) through the Myall Lakes National Park and along the coast. Strong head wind though made it hard going. When I got to the Ferry at Boomeri, the ferry man told me that they had been working on the trail to Seal Rocks and that it was now passable by bike. It was a short cut and so I thought I would chance it. I am really glad that I did as it was a really beautiful through dense bush but it was very hard going. The route had been improved for vehicles with gravel but it was no good for bikes with slick tires and a lot of weight on the back. I had to push the bike through the sand for about 10km. I did not see another person for about 2 hours. I did see loads of Goannas - one was 2m long and scared me but running across the track straight in front of me! One of the screws holding my pannier rack to my bike snapped in two so I replaced it with another one - which then also snapped. I will have to fix it tomorrow but fortunately it is still rideable.

I was glad when I got back on the tarmac road but I still had 34km to go to get to Forster and it was 6pm. I carried on biking for another 10km or so and was worrying about turning up late to Kim's house in Forster when a car passed me and then pulled in. I was wondering why they had stopped when out popped Dan Simms! Small world. He is spending a weekend break in the area. What perfect timing. He kindly gave me a lift to Forster Keys. I then biked from there to Forster and to Kim's house for about 7. Sometimes things just really work out.

I had a lovely evening getting to know Kim. She cooked us a great meal and I had a relax in the bath. Chatted till latish. She is wanting to travel more to the UK. It turns out that she had just joined couch surfing 3 days ago and I had sent a request to stay with her 2 days ago. She did not see the request in time and so did not answer but separately Peter from the previous nights accommodation had phoned her to ask if I could stay. Peter/Jackie and her have been friends for the last 20 years. Again, very small world! I have been really lucky so far....

Couch surfing is a really great way to met different people. It is great to meet Australians in their homes rather than just stay in hotels (where you could be anywhere in the world).

17th Oct - 20th Oct - Sydney

17th Oct - Bike tour of Sydney with Dan

View Australia Tracks in a larger map

THE TRIP REALLY STARTS......

Main first impression of Aus:

  1. It is sunny and beautiful. The weather is like a hot British summer right now.
  2. It is really expensive.... About double to the UK for food and everything else. My budget of £15 per day for everything (food, accommodation, equipment, outings) is going to be very tough!
  3. The Australians are crazy fitness people. Skinny and beautiful! There are people running everywhere, there are random monkey bars etc all over the place for people to do their exercises. All I did in South Africa was eat and drink.... I think I might shed a few pounds here. I will not be buying much food anyway with the cost of it....(http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=94909&id=1408960696&l=be6b6badb9).
  4. Dan Simms is a lovely man.

I faffed about in the morning organizing my stuff and then Dan took me out on a bike trip around Sydney. It was a fantastic way to see the city.Coffee and Bonsai Beach. Lunch at the Harbor. Finished off at the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbor Bridge to take more pictures.

Major Problem: Although my bike had been tuned and serviced in the UK before I left and there where no problems, there was a terrible noise coming from my back wheel whilst riding today! Not sure what it is but think that it is the bearings on the back wheel. The noise is there even when free wheeling.

When we got back Dan very kindly took the wheel to bits to check it. I now need some grease and other parts from the bike shop tomorrow to try and fix it. Not 100% what the problem is. I can't leave Sydney until it is all sorted :-(

FB: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=94710&id=1408960696

18th Oct - Bike Fixing, Organising, Run Round Park
Dan went to work leaving me to explore. I spent the morning online organising my stuff and then headed out to the bike shop for the part that I needed to fix the bike and also had a short walk round Sydney exploring.

In the afternoon I spent hours phoning banks and phone companies trying to sort things out. It seems that however much organisation I do companies are still rubbish. The Banks stopped my cards even though I told them I would be in AUS before I left the UK. VODAFONE customer support is terrible! DO NOT SPEND MONEY WITH THEM!!! I get to Sydney having spent days and days organising in the UK only to spend more time on the phone to companies, shopping for parts I can't afford and fixing my bike (which was working fine in the UK!). ARRGG - I just want to get going now. I do not think that the Jetlag helped either.

I went for a run round the park just round the corner from here. It cleared my head and made me happy to be exploring again. There are so many other runners - it is madness! They stop and do press-ups etc. Ummmm - lots of fit people not wearing much..... Lovely weather too.

Dan very very kindly greased up the wheel and took it out for a spin to see if it fixed the problem. The noise had gone but while testing it the outer cable of my gears went. I had taken it in to a bike shop to be serviced in the UK and for all of the cables to be replaced. Unfortunately they had only done the inner cables. I am really glad that the problem was found in Sydney before I headed off up north. Dan again very kindly replaced the cables while I went out and got a massive take away. Thanks so much Dan! :-)

19th Oct - Checking bike, Wander Round Sydney, Harbour Bridge and Opera House at Night
Up really early to take the bike for a spin to check that it was all OK and that I did not need to take it too a bike shop. There were no funky sounds and it was changing gear better than ever. THANK YOU DAN!

It was gray and miserable this morning and so I spoke to some friends on Skype for a bit first thing in the morning and then realised that the jetlag had kicked in and so went to sleep for a few hours in the day. It meant that I did not manage to fit in all of the organisation stuff I needed todo today and so I decided to chill and possibly leave on the 21st instead. Dan had gone to Melbourne for a couple of days this morning and so it did not really matter to him whether I was here or not.

Having gone to the bike shop to get an extra bike lock, some spare cables for my bike and a couple of other things from the camping shops, I headed for an explorer over to North Sydney on my bike and then walked back over the Pedestrian part of the bridge to take photos of the Opera house. I wandered around until dark so that I could see it all lit up and take some more photos etc. I had a great explore and headed back to the flat late.

FB: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1408960696#!/album.php?aid=94766&id=1408960696

I watched the long way round until 2am (still not sorted with time change) whilst I tuned up the bike and caught up on organising photos, diary, emails, blog and organising accommodation for the next few days.

The long way round has inspired me to do a video diary.

All I ate today was the left overs from yesterday's curry. Ummmmm.

20th Oct - Shopping, Wander Round Sydney Harbour and Opera House in Sunshine, Watched the Long Way Round

I decided not to head out of Sydney today as I had not managed to get accommodation organised for tonight and I still had some planning stuff to do online.

It was lovely and sunny today and so I went back to the habour bridge and opera house to see it in all of its glory. On the way I went round several shops to get camping and touring maps of the East Coast and a couple of bits of clothes. I now have only light weight, hiking/biking clothes for the trip.

Good day round Sydney.

FB: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=94908&id=1408960696&l=555462b07d

Finished off watching The Long Way Round.

Yippee. I am writing this blog now and I have just received 2 emails from couch surfing. I have accommodation for the next couple of nights....

It has been fantastic to have a base for the last few days to really sort out all of my equipment and test it and to get over the lack of sleep. Thanks again to Dan.

I really like Sydney. It is a very friendly place with lots going on. If you are paid in AUS $ then it is a great place to live. I am excited about seeing the rest of AUS now...

14th Oct - 16th Oct - Travel from Cape Town to Sydney

14th Oct
Me and Abi where rather worse for wear this morning..... Flight at midday back to Joburg. Said goodbye to Abi at airport and she got a flight home. Me and Drew picked up the Pugs and back to home for an early night.

I had to organise flights etc for big flight to Sydney tomorrow. Unfortunately, I found out that Qantas will not allow me to do the normal things with the tickets that I have. I can't check in online, I have to be at checking for all flights (domestic included) 90 minutes before departure and most importantly I can't purchase excess baggage online before hand (at a much cheaper price). Non of this info was on the website and when I tried to check in online it just gave funcky errors. I phoned up to find out that the cost of excess baggage for me at the airport is £25 per kg ($50 AUS)! My bike weighs 16kg boxed up. My bags empty weight 3kg. I am allowed 23kg. That leaves 4kg for all of my stuff for 1 year!

I have been emailing Qantas re sponsorship (just to waver the excess baggage fees) - they said "NO". I am trying to raise money for Oxfam doing this. Rather unfair me thinks :-(
I was over tired after a good few days partying and ended up a bit upset. I will be on £15 per day on average for the year. It will be tight even without having to spend £1000 in excess baggage!

15th Oct
Last day in SA and flying out to Sydney. Thanks so much to my Uncle Drew for a holiday of a life time. It was great to get to know him better and see such a massive part of Southern Africa in only 3 weeks. I feel exhausted now!

Several hours organising my things so that I could carry as much as possible on to the flight. Used a Stanley knife to chop out the pages of Lonely planet and that I did not need. Got rid off all excess toiletries and clothes.

Final wander round Joburg and at the airport for 3. I then spent 1 hour sorting out stuff and putting on all of the clothes that I would be taking so that I did not have to pay for them and putting everything heavy into hand luggage.

I was 2 kg over when checked in bike and bag - but the guy could not add up and said I was just on 23kg :-) I looked like a complete idiot with everything on. I was soooo hot.

It took 1 hour to then get through security as I had to take off everything that I was wearing and they search all of my bags. Once through security all my clothes went into another bag and I then wandered round the airport with 3 big bags for hand luggage...... uncomfortable but FREE!
Flight was OK.

What to take on a bike ride for 1 year:

Arrive at Sydney airport at 3.15pm and then spent several hours building my bike out of the box, getting through quarantine and changing clothes. Apparently if you have been to Africa then you are likely to be carrying all sorts of things. Everything had to be checked for bugs etc. Picked up a sim card and then in only 3 hours from arriving I set off....

I biked from the airport to Dan Simms' flat (central Sydney). Dan a colleague from SunGard is very kindly putting me up for a few days. Hi flat is awesome. Very central and great views etc.

We went out for a meal and a few drinks. As all good nights out should do, finished off the evening at 3am watching Sean of the Dead.

10th Oct - 14th Oct - Cape Town

10th Oct
Up at 4.30 and traveled by car from Leshiba Lodge to Joberg to then catch a flight to Cape Town. It was beautiful and sunny and warm when we left. We arrived in Cape Town to torrential rain and wind. It felt like home i.e. back in UK!

Stayed in Green Point - right opposite the World Cup Stadium.

We went out for an amazing pizza just down the road from the Hotel and then as we were all pretty tired from a days traveling had an early night.

11th Oct

The weather was much better today but still cloudy and so we decided to do the wine tour. Natasha (Abi's friend who lives in Cape Town) took us all on a great tour. We had sampled 12 wines and loads of cheese before lunch! The wine selection was fantastic. There are hundreds of vineyards round the area.

Drew was driving and got a little tired of 3 tipsy, giggling girls and so we stopped the wine tour and went to a Motor Museum. It was much more fun than I thought it would be. I have now found 3 blue convertibles that I can chose from in the future to buy.....

We had lunch in the little tourist town of Frenchoek and then headed back on a scenic circular route to Cape Town.

Cape Town region is very different to Joburg area. It is rocky, very green and mountainous. It has a much more European feel to it than Joburg, which feels a bit like the States. It really is well worth visiting. There are hardly any security walls and electric fences verses Joburg.

Chilled evening.

12th Oct
Drew, Abi and me went for a drive to Cape Point. Cape Point is the most southern tip of Africa. The road from Cape Town was beautiful and well worth the drive. There were loads of Baffons on the road, jumping on the car.
I went for a run up to the top and the light house and then along to the end of the peninusal while the others went for a drink. The photos are on FB:

I was really happy with my lizzard photo with the mountains in the background :-)

After Cape Point we drove to Simon's town for a wander round and fish and chips by the harbour. We also went to have a noisy at the Penguins. I loved the signs warning of Penguins.

Went for a nap when we got back to Cape Town. We decided to have an early night and not bother going out for a meal and just get some snacks instead. Popped in for a night cap on way back from shops to Hotel and ended up having a good old fashioned drinking session and talking rubbish till the small hours.

A fab day.

13th Oct
We had planned to go up Table Mountain in the morning today (me walking up it and the others on the cable car) and then off up the coast to see the Whales. When we got to the bottom of the cable car we found it was shut because it was too windy. It was even too windy to walk up. I walked up the Lions Head Mountain instead while the others went off shopping. Absolutely great views and weather. Ran down again and met the others to go for lunch by the beach.

View SA Tracks in a larger map

The beach was white and sandy and so I went for a run and then for a quick swim. The views were fantastic.

Got all dressed up and went out for an amazing Sushi meal with Natasha, her husband Walter, Abi and Drew. The restuarant had brilliant views over the sea. We then headed out for a last night of holiday drink or 2. Met some of Walter's friends and collegues. Big night....

7th Oct - 10th Oct - Leshiba Lodge SA Bush

View SA Tracks in a larger map

This is was the most perfect place to stay ever! The scenery and animals were amazing and the accommodation and service could not be faulted :-)

First day we traveled there from Joburg and arrived mid afternoon (for afternoon tea) and so just chilled by the pool, napped and had a lovely evening meal.

Next day me and Abi went for a guided nature walk in the morning with Trymore. As there are no lions or elephants in the park you can walk around very safely. It was great to be out of a vehicle and really in the bush. We walked back for brunch and then chilled for a few hours before afternoon tea. We had a game drive in the evening and watched the sunset with a bottle of wine. Fantastic!

On the last day Abi got up and went for a horse ride through the bush and I took myself off for a long run and climbed a mountain to look over the whole park. Afternoon lunch and then another game drive with Drew and Abi :-)

An amazing place to stay.

Spent a few days with my Uncle in Joburg. Stayed at his house, visited his worked and explored Joburg restaurants. Went for several runs around the parks. The weather was fantastic.

Traveled for 2 days by car to Chobe National Park in Botswana for 4 days camping in the bush with my Uncle and 15 friends of his. Amazing wildlife and scenery. Camping in the bush with no barriers from the animals (other than a tent canvas) was exciting. You could hear lions and elephants through the night :-) Baboons are scarier than I originally thought. It was great to do Safari independently rather than with a paid guide.

Really good luck that several of the guys camping with us are professional photographers and gave me pointers on how to use my camera :-) Brilliant start to the trip.

Photos of this trip are on FB:

Thanks Rachel for getting no sleep for 2 nights and helping me out so much!

Thanks so much to Dave for getting up at 5 in the morning and driving me to the airport and for Edu for suffering a bad leg and meeting be at the airport to say goodbye.

At the airport

Met a lovely lady at the BA check in desk who kindly wavered the excess baggage charges for my flight to Joburg. She has also run several marathons for charity in the past. Thanks BA! I will add the BA logo to my just giving page and blog :-)

Before Leaving the Country

Thanks soooo much to my lovely friends for putting up with me stressing and running round like a headless chicken for the couple of weeks before I left the country:

  • In particular thanks go to Rachel who had her first ever sleeping bag and camping experience in our living room for the 2 nights before I left. There was no furniture left in the flat! Bubble wrap will never be the same.Rachel: I promise we will go ice skating in Antarctica!
  • Thanks to my Sister and Dad and Mim for arranging a great 30th and Leaving the Country party.
  • Thanks to Sarah for helping me move my stuff to my old house and driving me back from Birmingham late on a school night.
  • Thanks to Tim for storing my stuff and helping me sell things.

WARNING:
Anyone thinking of doing a trip like this, take the time that you think it will take to plan the trip, double it, then triple it and then multiply by 10 and then you might get close to how much time it takes. I have written a list of the equipment etc in a later entry.

WARNING 2:
Do not expect Vodafone customer support to be competent in anyway! Expect to phone them daily to sort out issues and be lied to!
