14th Jan - Reporoa to Rotorau

I woke up early with the alarm so that I could phone up and sort out the flight to India. I had not managed to get through by email or on the phone to the Travel Butler because they were busy with changing peoples flights out of Brisbane with all of the floods etc. Eventually I got through to the people that I booked with in the first place and I changed my flights for £10 :-) I have been having such a fab time in the North Island that I wanted another week here so that I could see more of the country.

I tried to get back to sleep but did not manage it. Brian had kindly looked at my bike and tried to find where the noise was coming from and tightened up everything. He said that he could not find anything obvious. I spent sometime faffing on my bike, chatting with Brian and Sue and on the internet. We had lunch together and then Brian and Sue headed off. They had offered me a lift further north but I wanted to bike and so headed off early afternoon. Unfortunately the noise on the bike was really bad when I sent off and so I spend a while trying to work out what it was.
It was a lovely sunny day. Brian had suggested a hilly scenic route to Rotorau via the Hot Pools. I took my time getting to the Hot Pools as I was faffing with my bike. Brian met me at the pools on his way back from the North to help me with the noise but we could not work out what it was. Brian headed off about 6 and then I went into the Hot Pools. The people there very kindly let me in with no cost as I was not staying long and had to leave soon in order to get to Rotorau before dark.

The hot pools where great. I could very easily have spent hours chilling there. The water is heated by passing it over the naturally hot rocks and then feeding it into the pools (42C). I did a nature walk along the stream and then had a swim in the swimming pool and then enjoyed sitting in the baths. I would very much recommend a visit. It is very different to anywhere else I have been. I do find it very strange that people live in an area with steam coming out of of the ground.

I headed off about 7.30 - far too late really to get to Rotorau before dark. I then made a wrong turning and it was even later..... It was a lovely ride in the sunset but it was hilly with a head wind and slow going. I did not get to Brydies house until about 9.30 by which time it was really dark. Brydie is another person from warm showers. She had let me know that she was working till 10 and so I was not too worried about turning up late as I knew that she would not be there.
There were 2 other cyclists also staying - a German couple in their early 30's that have been biking around the world for 22 months. They got their degrees in Germany and then just headed off. They were really interesting to chat too. They suggested that I might get very lonely in China on my own as the Chinese do not really talk to strangers.

Brydie joined us for a cuppa when she got back from work and we all enjoyed sharing biking stories..... sad gits.
