We were up at 7 and drove to the start of the walk after the normal breakfast of porridge and coffee :-)
When looking at the walk in the guide book last night it had said that it was a 52km walk but it was unclear whether that was the circular walk or the inner track followed by the coastal track - so we thought we might be able to do it all in one day. When we checked on the signs at the start of the walk at the distances etc it showed that it was 52km for just the coast part. We decided to set off along the inner track and see how we did for time to do as much as possible in one day. However, we took the camping things and just about enough food in case we needed to stay for 2 days.
We started off on the walk at 9am. The inner track was hard work. Very hilly through the forest and uneven path. It was a warm day with partial cloud cover. Slow hot going but lovely. Shame that there were not many look out points to see the views. We gave up on the idea of getting back in one day about 3 and just decided to continue on and do a really big 2 day walk. We got to the Awapoto hut at 6 and stopped for something to eat and chatted with the other people that were there. They thought we were mad as we were continuing walking and had already walked from the car-park.
We had done 44 hard kms by the time we stopped. Although I put the tent up in case it unexpectedly rained in the middle of the night, we decided to sleep under the stars - something I have never done on land. It was really awesome to wake up at 3 in the morning and listen to the silence and see the sky full of stars....
