5th Jan - Abel Tasman Walk (coastal track)

Today was one of the best days of the trip! Challenging and fun....

We slept until 8ish and then packed up and got going. Not much for breakfast as we are spreading the food out through the day to make sure we have enough to get back to the car. Very small rations today but just enough. We walked to the busy campsite (Anapai) on the side of the beach for about 11 and were very glad to find that they sold chocolate bars and so we had one each for a treat for second breakfast. We then headed on to Awaroa bay. This point is crossable only 2 hours either side of low tide (4pm today) and so as we got there at 12.30 we thought we would have to wait. As it turned out a lovely guy from the doc was crossing on his boat and offered us a lift - he was literally just leaving the shore as we arrived. It could not have been more perfect timing :-)

When we then continued the walk we saw a sign for a lodge. As far as we were aware from our guide book and other information there was no stores/restaurants/civilisation on the walk (as there is not on any other great walk). However, on this walk a short change of route take you too a lodge. We waded across the estuary to get there and arrive at about 1.30. It was awesome as we had expected to be a bit hungry for the later part of the day as we did not have a massive amount of food and we had also been expecting to just carry on walking. Instead we had a great break in the sunshine eating half a pizza each, drinking coffee and cake. It tasted sooooo good as it was so unexpected.

The walk back is beautiful.

We were both in an awesome mood as well and chatted all the way back to the car. We raced back so that we could get there in time to buy and Indian Take away. We had said that as it would be our last night (having been traveling together on and off for 3 weeks) we would not have instant noodles and instead treat ourselves to a take away :-)

We got a take away on the way back to Nelson and then went for a drink in town when we arrived. We took our bottle of wine and take away to the park and had a great meal at 1 in the morning to celebrate. A really great day - but very long!
